The Storytagging project courtesy of Northword will utilise the power of traditional storytelling to help the creative industries in northern regions. These include Russia, Sweden, Finland, Scotland and Northern Ireland. I will showcase my ceramic ware with Northword, having been awarded Creative Practitioner which will allow me to develop a ceramic showpiece in relation to a local folkloric story.

I have chosen ‘The Lighthouse Kitchen Cupboards’ by Alison McFaul as the inspiration behind my piece and was fortunate enough to meet Alison who provided a tour of Rathlin island, especially the upside-down lighthouse which is featured in McFaul’s ‘The Lighthouse Kitchen Cupboards’. In viewing the kitchen cupboards and dresser that inspired Alison's story truly brought the nostalgia of lighthouse keeping to life. I’m thrilled to be part of this project and excited at the prospect of different modes of storytelling through creative practices.
In response to McFaul’s story, I will create functional kitchen ware, portraying the everyday use of handcrafted ware which could be passed from generation to generation: “The cupboards and the dresser too, Filled with stripey china blue”-McFaul.
This project includes the combination of two different crafts, uniting elements of mixed media with screen-printing and ceramics. Ceramics is a craft for expansion, to incorporate other crafts into, providing timeless pieces and I believe this project is testament to that. My craft reflects the overlooked qualities of the scenic area, utilising a range of traditional/contemporary skills which will be unveiled in November courtesy of the Northword Storytagging Project.
I look forward to capturing the different craft processes and introducing them to you on my social media pages, so make sure to keep checking in.
I’d like to conclude with a special thank you to Rich Osborn and Jade Hamill. Osborn filmed my trip to Rathlin which will be unveiled by northwordni in an upcoming video celebrating local culture. Hamill’s involvement led to an article on ‘Lighthouse keeping: a bygone era’, so make sure to check it out: https://jadehamillwashere.blogspot.com/.../lighthouse...
